Then and Now in America

Today America faces difficult social and economic challenges, the likes of which have not been seen for decades. During times of great challenge, it is often artists and writers who not only define the situation but also offer insight and hope for people in everyday life. During the Great Depression of the 1930s, author John Steinbeck gave us such defining works as The Grapes of Wrath and Of Mice and Men. Today, as we face equally challenging economic times and social injustices, the novels and stories of Donald O’Donovan define those challenges and offer a unique perspective of tolerance, sensitivity, and fairness. Just as Then and Now in America contrasts a simpler time in American culture with today’s complexities and breakdowns, The Sugarhouse showcases the sweetness and innocence of 1950s America, whereas Night Train exposes the raw and sometimes desperate inequities of present-day culture.
